Starting with the conviction that there is great wisdom and inspirational power in artistic and cultural works – wisdom and power that can help people a lot in their lives! – Paths to Perception is a project through which Antropical artists hear out questions or challenges from anyone, and then, pooling their knowledge of the diverse cultural-artistic traditions they come from, recommend artistic and cultural works they believe could help with thinking differently and perhaps more productively about those questions or challenges.

The project takes two forms:

- roundtable discussions

In these sessions, which have major questions or challenges of the day as their themes, we present a programme of relevant art works and then moderate a discussion on what we can learn from these art works, what they stimulate or provoke in us and how we respond to them. We have done these sessions in schools and cultural institutions.

- direct consultations

People reach out to us with their own questions and challenges, and we respond with our recommendations.

Exhibition

Osmosis is the phenomenon in which two sides draw out characteristics from each other when in contact. Thoughts and opinions bleed into us gradually, as we become closer and more alike over time.

In the past years, the global pandemic has significantly transformed our relationship in regards to communicating and togetherness. The development of worldwide communication aimed to reduce distance between individuals. However, post pandemic, it has been felt universally that this free communication ideal still lacks a certain intimacy, and leaves much to individual interpretation.

What secret transmissions do we pass, absorb and participate in in our lives, either consciously and subconsciously? And how?

With Osmosis, Antropical members aimed to raise such questions and present their interpretations, with a ficus on communication, translation and transference.

Osmosis is a collaboration between Antropical collective and Ilali Studio. Ilali is an artist studio and gallery based in Berlin, seeking to intertwine multiple disciplines & artistic faiths through encouraging community and the practice of prefigurative politics.

Chrysalis residency I

This edition is a retrospective analysis of the research of the last 4 editions of Antropical Residency. Between the 1st and 7th of February 2021, former residents were welcome to gather for a round of evaluation of the annual residency cycle. Bringing together four years of project work, the residents set the foundation of our identity as an official artistic collective, platform and recently established Antropical - Ministry of Strange Affairs asbl.

However, this retrospective analysis of the process, intended and actual outcomes, has been hindered by the pandemic. Originally planned for August 2020, the residency is finally taking place in two phases. The first happened in February 2021, when we met online to redefine our program, address power structures and contemplate our future vision.

Chrysalis residency II

Members of the Antropical collective spent two weeks at Sementerie Artistiche, Crevalcore, a space for artistic and theatrical research.

In a time of division and distance Antropical participants used this residency to address central questions related to themes of power structures, community/inclusion and value systems. The aim was using collaborative art practices, to research into non-institutional forms of knowledge, spontaneous actions and workshops through the exploration of their surroundings. As some of the members were involved online, the works created during the residency led to discussions around territories, communication, heritage, sharing, commonalities - all through transdisciplinary practices.

This second chapter of Chrysalis Residency was concluded with two process-driven exhibitions: at CA/OS Gallery in Modena, Italy, and at Sementerie Artistiche, Crevalcore.

2020

30km Art tour in the Forests of West Luxembourg, LU

Another View on Nature is an interactive art trail that extends across 29km of forest areas in Luxembourg. Using playfulness as a medium, it directs people’s focus away from their usual field of vision while they walk in the forest, to shift their way of relating to the environment.

Launched in 2020, Antropical worked in collaboration with Mirador – Centre for nature and forests, in contributing to Doheem Vakanz (Holiday at Home), a state program initiated in response to the current pandemic.

This project came from Antropical’s drive to cultivate a playful and interactive approach to art, erasing borders between creation, production and everyday life, with the intention of finding sustainable ways to foster culture. Inspired by Mirador’s leading moto ‘another perspective on nature’, Antropical artists have developed several original installations which enable people to encounter nature from a different angle, outside of the confines of an institution.

2019

Artistic Research Residency

Beginning with this intentionally ambiguous title, Antropical residents of 2019 have collaboratively explored how play can mean questioning, resistance, inclusion, deconstructing and reconstructing the rules. Through activities, workshops, projects, soundboards, performances, games and experimentations, they have addressed the seriousness of play, using the concept of Kolla as a playground and bringing it to life.

With Play Until United, Antropical aimed to create a playful environment, a magic circle within which imagination would come to life, to unite people and lead them into an alternative reality. Opening a portal – the threshold which we cross between reality and its alternatives – it strived to help us become aware of a different state of mind, this of play. Within this playground, we could then find further such portals inviting new games within the game of Kolla. Once you left the playground of the festival through the portal, your reality would hopefully never be the same.

2018

Artistic Research Residency

The 2018 edition of Antropical was set to research the theme of microcosm in relation to the macrocosm. The Kolla Festival – a playground in which people can safely experiment, interact and create without the competitive pressure of society – could be considered as a small scale society with its own set of rules, allowing for a detailed observation in contrast with the outside world.

In 2018, Antropical also introduced a new position within the team: the Ambassadors. Two artists of the previous year were invited to act as a bridge between the organisers and the residents, and to create a continuity with the previous research. Monika Balu and Valentine Emilia Bossert took on the challenge to sculpt their roles as the residency unfolded.

2017

Artistic Research Residency

As we celebrated our one year anniversary, we had time to process and evaluate our theme. In 2017, our participants' exchange flourished, inspired and birthed beautiful projects reflecting site-specific research and experiences of communal living.

Throughout the Kolla Festival 2016 we noticed that, while we aimed to continue making site-specific art, we did not sufficiently take into account the most substantial part of our target group, namely, the festival audience.

Therefore, we set Antropical 2017 to continue conduct a wider research on alternative exhibition and art production methods. The project's aim was to find a way to integrate artistic research within the context of the festival. With this specific question in mind: what is the relation between high culture and popular culture?

2016

Artistic Research Residency

In summer 2016, Antropical brought together 12 emerging artists from seven different countries for a 10-day residency within the context of the Kolla Festival. Working across disciplines including visual art, cinema, dance, performance, music and web design, the artists explored a young natural landscape shaped by industrialisation and environmental transformation. Through observation, experimentation and exchange with local people and specialists, the residency treated the site as a living laboratory for artistic research. Collective exercises, discussions and daily presentations encouraged participants to develop individual and collaborative responses, while valuing experimentation and process alongside finished works. Antropical aimed to foster art as a shared cultural practice.
